About the Music.org.za website

MISSION
To be a most useful reference and educational resource about musicians in South Africa and the neighbouring regions.

BACKGROUND
Started in 1997 as an initiative of Making Music Productions, the site at first carried details of artists who had a working relation with MMP. Subsequently, the site has included biographies of an increasing array of South African and African musicians - a priority has been to profile artists who were previously marginalised in much of the media.

Music.org.za continued growing, and in order to make the resource more versatile, was transformed to a database during 2003. This facilitates content management, and easier access to music.org.za's ever-increasing content base.

CONTENT
The Music.org.za website was set up, and is maintained by Making Music Productions cc. The site is a key project of MMP's ongoing "Re-connection Project", a project of cultural reconstruction.

The objective of Music.org.za is to serve as a consistent reference resource on South and southern African artists, with emphasis on biography. From the outset, we have prioritised music forms which were marginalised under Apartheid.

There are many gig guides and listing services (see our LINKS section), and Music.org.za does not aim to be a listing. From time to time, we do however include information about shows which feature artists listed on this website. During 2003, we received support from MMiNO to engage a media trainee, and to transform the initial html website into a database driven model. This was important because the critical mass of content was becoming unwieldy at that stage.

The site is edited by Steve Gordon and Eugene Arries, with programming and backend assistance from Jannie Van Tonder.
