GUY BUTTERY - Live Solo Performance
Back to Artist A-Z A-Z Popup

Print Print version
Buttery, Guy (South Africa)

ACCUMULATING music of all styles since a very young age, Guy also plays various styles of music, whilst developing his own.

He has many artists who have influenced and enlightened him but says that Michael Hedges, Don Ross, Ralph Towner, George Winston and Steve Newman stand out the most.

Many of his original pieces use unorthodox guitar techniques. Guy can be seen using his left hand to play the rhythm section of a song whilst his right hand will come over the neck of the guitar to play the bass line or melody.

Extensive uses of harmonics, unusual percussive methods on the body of the guitar and slap harmonics are often incorporated into his compositions. These techniques often give the impression of two or even three instruments being played at once

Almost all of his songs are written in an alternate tuning, many of them created by Guy himself. This allows for new shapes, patterns and even sounds to project from his instrument. Guy also plays the mandolin and sitar.

Instrumentation:
guitar (acoustic / semi-acoustic)
Genre: folk, African Jazz
In just his few months of performing publicly, Guy has had the honour of performing with musicians and bands such as Landscape Prayers, Perez, Butternut, Nibs van der Spuy and Gito Baloi (Tananas), whilst also playing at all Major music festivals and theatres around the country.

At the tender age of 18, Guy released his highly acclaimed debut album "When I Grow Up...", of all original compositions. It was nominated for both 'Best Instrumental Album of the Year' and 'Best Newcomer for 2002' by the South African Music Awards (SAMA).

Byrne -[upright bass] (both of Landscape Prayers) and ex-Pistolfish guitarist Barry Corden.

This album captures Guy's unique performances, versatility and stunning technique. The Daily News recently described Guy as "the most exciting player I've seen in the last ten years, who is destined for greater heights." Guy continues to write music, incorporating his innovative style and extreme passion.
