WITH a background in singing and dance, Fancy Galada worked and toured with a succession of groups, before establishing her profile as a solo artist.

A product of the Cape Town township of Langa, Fancy has been an active member of groups such as Heshoo Beshoo and Amampondo and, together with Labella, launched the pop / R&B duo La Fancy in 1995.

Her career in music started in the school choir. At school she was very skeptical about singing in the choir. She would get into trouble for not attending "practices" because all she wanted to do was to entertain and sing cover versions of the music she heard on radio in the early 80's.

Instrumentation:
vocals
Genre: African, traditional / indigenous

Her first engagement was as a singer for a traditional group called "Amaqawe". Her talent for dancing was discovered, and she was then introduced to Jazzart, working with a multiucultural group of dancers and singers called Abamanyani, who performed at the Grahamstown Festival and at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg.

In 1987 she joined Heshoo Beshoo, a traditional group from Langa. The group was invited to Canada to perform at "The Children's Festival" in 1991, and in 1993 were again invited to tour Canada and USA.

Moving beyond the community arts environment, in 1995 Fancy formed a duo with fellow singer Labella and recorded the album La Fancy. The album mixed R&B with a touch of township pop, and was produced by Joe Nina.

With the album moving slowly, Fancy spent a considerable portion of the next two years as a member of Langa's world-renowned percussion ensemble, Amampondo. Some of the places that she toured with band include Canada,Italy, Norway, Finland, Belgium, Holland, Poland and the United States.

In 1996 Amampondo toured Europe, and during the tour, Fancy performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland , where Amampondo was featured on the African Night, along with Angelique Kidjo and Papa Wemba. When at the "World in The North" festival in Gothenburg in 1998, Fancy and fellow Amampondo vocalist Nonhle, performed the song 'Malaika' in a special guest spot with Angelique Kidjo.

While continuing to work as a freelance / session vocalist for artists such as Amampondo, and Sylvia Mdunyelwa, Fancy started her own group. In 2002 she was invited by the Department of Arts & Culture to perform with her band at South Africa's National Day celebrations in Brussels.
