Tutu Puoane

VOCALIST Tutu Puoane was born May 31st, 1979 in South Africa. She started playing music professionally in 1997 in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa. Tutu studied jazz vocals with Jelena Reveshin, Natasha Roth-Schofield and Rachel Gould. She's played concerts in South Africa, Italy, New York, Germany, New Orleans, Belgium and Holland.

Ms Puoane has received several awards from major South African Jazz Competitions. In 2000 she received the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters for the Cape Region and 2001 she received a merit award for young promising talent at the Daimler Chrysler South African Jazz Competition. Tutu has shared the same stage with the likes of S’bongile Khumalo, Jimmy Dludlu, Carlo Mombelli, Marcus Wyatt, Jack van Poll, Hein van de Geyn, Hans van Oosterhout, Stefan Lievestro, Dr. Pallermaerts, Stacy Rowles, Mark Murphy, Madeline Bell just to mention a few.

Tutu has performed extensively in South Africa with many great South African musicians. In 2001, she performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Cape Town, leading an afro-latino band, Tucan-Tucan. She toured New York in 2000 as the vocalist with the South African National Youth Big Band.

Tutu is currently the vocalist for the Frits Bayens Big Band of Breda, Netherlands, and has just been awarded the 2004 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for music.

Pianist Ewout Pierreux graduated in 2001 from the Jazz department of the “Lemmens Conservatory" in Leuven (Belgium), where Ron Van Rossum was his teacher. During his education, he followed workshops with Brad Mehldau, Bobo Stenson, Kenny Werner and Bruce Barth. He also had lessons from Christoph Erbstösser, Rob Madna and Mike LeDonne. During the summer of 2001, he was a member of the workshop-orchestra conducted by Maria Schneider, which performed at the Middelheim Jazzfestival. Apart from being the pianist in this quartet, Ewout is a sideman in different ensembles and has played concerts with the “Brussels Jazz Orchestra" and Frank Vaganée.

Bassist Rodrigo Reijers was born December 15th, 1975 in Loo(gld) Holland.He started playing bass in various folkgroups. Reijers studied jazz double bass in Arnhem and The Hague with H. Haverhoek, Hein van de Geyn and Frans van de Hoeven. He performed with various artists like Michael Brecker, Slide Hampton, Mark Murphy, Erik Vloeimans and Eef Albers.

Drummer Yves Peeters (1978) studied at the jazz department of the “Lemmens Conservatory" in Leuven (Belgium), where Dr. Pallemaerts was his teacher. He also travelled abroad several times to get his master classes from great jazzdrummers, such as Billy Hart, Johnny Vidacovich, Jorge Rossi and Keith Copeland. Yves has already played with several Belgium’s best jazz musicians, a.o. Bert Joris, Frank Vaganée and Phil Abraham. Currently he is working as a sideman in different ensembles in Belgium and abroad.

Puoane together with Belgian pianist Ewout Pierreux, Dutch bassist Rodrigo Reijers and Belgian drummer Yves Peeters, play a vast variety of jazz standard repertoire, tastefully arranged, with new and exciting compositions from a number of young talented South African composers. The group will be touring in South Africa during July 2004.
