Bhikha, Zain (South Africa)
Zain Bhika

Born on the 9th August 1974 in Pretoria, (now Tshwane) South Africa, into a family of four, Zain is the only son among his siblings. He began singing at a very early age, entertaining all family members, schoolmates and colleagues alike. It was apparent that his talent was destined for bigger things.

Singing was something that came naturally to Zain, a talent that groomed him into the person that he is today.

Zain attributes his success, personally and professionally to his parents, Rashid and Miriam Bhikha, whose support has taught him that nothing in life comes without hard work. With this in mind Zain has seen his singing career soar to great heights ?even greater than he could imagine.

In 1994, Zain entered a singing competition on a local radio station, Radio 702. From thousands of entries, mostly professional musicians, Zain won the competition and this caused him to consider recording an album. He has since recorded many albums , and worked with many well-known international artists, including Yusuf Islam and the well-known Nasheed artist, Dawud Whrnsby Ali,
Instrumentation:

Genre: gospel / spiritual

South African born artist - Zain Bhikha ?has seen his prolific horde of music become very popular with adults, youth and young children who find the songs both educational and inspiring, and in line with this Bhikha has released Allah Knows. Following on his more mature Mountain of Makkah album released in 2005, Allah Knows is primarily about the journey of a child.

Allah Knows, which also features friends and artists, Dawud Wharnsby Ali (Canadian artist) , and Abdul Malik Ahmad (American artist), is an album dedicated to his son Rashid and also features a newly discovered singer, Naadira Alli, who hails from Newclare, Johannesburg.

This new album has 10 inspirational and informative songs. Some of the most appealing songs, Include, My Mom is Amazing, which has a sting in the tail, Pizza in His Pocket and A Child’s Prayer which children will enjoy. Other smooth songs include the title track ?Allah Knows - and Slowly Slow which Zain wrote for his son, Rashid and Can’t U See which is a Rap song that Rashid sings with an American Rapper, Abdul Malik Ahmad and this has been vastly appreciated by youth and parents for its strong message on drugs. Zain’s ability to successfully weave different types of music in this new album makes it Zain’s best work to date.

When Bhikha started singing, Islamic songs were not sung in English, and hence he was a pioneer in Nasheed genre. As one of the first English-Islamic singers he has opened the door for many other artists and his albums have been released in many countries, including the United Kingdom, North America, Malaysia, France, Turkey, The Middle East, and Australia. He has performed live in cities across most continents and has become very popular in Islamic Music. In addition to music, Bhikha has also written and directed many successful plays for schools. One such play, An Orphans Tale, which he produced in conjunction with the Pretoria (now Tshwane) Muslim School, was such a great success that it brought in a full house for all three nights that it ran!

Bhikha has performed with a long list of well-known artists, such as Khalid Belhrouzhi, Native Deen, Qatrunada, Imad Rami, Sami Yusuf, Khaleel Mohamed, and his mentor, Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens).

In his many local performances for Islamic schools, launches, fêtes and dinners, Bhikha has performed with local artists like Faeeza Malinga, Ziyaad Patel, Imran Dhaya and of course, his son Rashid Bhikha.

Bhikha writes most of his songs, which are driven by emotion, and by the need to reassure people that there is always hope and that turning to God is the answer to our questions and confusion. The new album’s title song, Allah Knows aims to reassure us that GOD is always there for us.

Many of Bhikha’s songs represent times in his life when he was learning and remembering how necessary Allah’s presence is, and as such his songs provide young and old with an alternative to modern music, much of which carries destructive messages.

Zain will be performing with his son Rashid and Naadira on his next international tour.
