In contrast to the shallow chants of other Kwaito artists, Zola incorporates challenging lyrics. His lyrics reflect his deep thinking and heightened perception. His themes range from ghetto to a tribute to the humanity of Zionism.
Zola comes from the township of Zola in Soweto. The stereotyped Bantu education that he received, as he often refers to his days of schooling under the apartheid system, did not cloud his desire to be a successful person in life. Maybe this is because he is among the few youths, that are steeped in Steve Biko’s philosophy of Black Consciousness and believe that black people are truly on their own.
Zola used the little that he had to rise from the doldrums of the townships and to become a star that has taken full responsibility and charge of his life. He stands as an inspiration to many youths from the townships and he remains humble regardless of the fame and fortune that he has achieved so far. He is a keen observer of people and his surroundings and has managed to avoid being sucked into a life of crime and drug abuse.Zola’s debut CD 'UMWEMBLE' included songs like Ghetto Scandalous and Mdlwebe, which shook not only the dance floors but also the mindset of youngsters in the country. Just to make Christmas more exciting for his fans and to lure new admires Zola decided to return with a fresh release,'KHOKHOVULA'. This will surely confirm his ability to entice, inspire and evoke different reactions and feelings.
The standard of 'KHOKHOVULA' surpasses 'UMWEMBLE'. From the hardcore kwaito track 'TSHITSHILAMI', to the slamming hip hop track 'SGEBENGU SAM' to the house filled 'SANA LUMA' to the Gospel rich 'SOMLINDA NGENGOMA'. This is the album of the year. 15 tracks of pure creativity.Quote - “Kwaito kids are made from hunger, abuse, no father, violence, guns. Now as adults we must change the game for the better! Now we must change everything we are made from."
ZOLA is the icon of the South African youth that we have been waiting for.
